What to Wear Wednesday...with Amanda Wiggins
It's WTWW! And we're wrapping up October's theme of Must-Have Fall Accessories with 2 posts! First up is Amanda of Amanda Wiggins Photography! She's gonna share lots about one of the most trendy accessories these days--leggings!"Leggings are not pants… leggings are not pants… leggings are not pants… I try to tell this to myself every day before stepping out of the house, but I just can’t help it. They are just so darned comfortable, and on top of that, they’re everywhere! Now that Autumn is upon us, bare legs are going bye-bye, so today we’re going to chat about how to kill it in leggings and tights, making use of layering and accessory coordination to pull off that polished look.
First, though, let’s talk prints. Printed leggings are everywhere, and for good reason! They impart personality and color into a wardrobe and can be added to a flared skater skirt or pretty dress to give it an extra layer of funk. One fun trend that I’ve been seeing lately is mixing a subtle printed legging with a bolder layering piece, such as an aztec-inspired cardigan or a fun flannel scarf.
When I coach my seniors on their wardrobe, printed leggings invariably show up in their choices. I’m always careful to make sure that the rest of their ensemble complements and doesn’t compete with a busy print, and any accessories should pick up on the same colors that already exist in their legwear.
Fall is the perfect time to bust out that fun colored pair of leggings. If they have a textural pattern on them, all the better! Coordinating accessories in this case is a must, and I usually suggest a blanket scarf or headgear in the form of a beanie or floppy hat to balance the color.
And you can’t talk about leggings without including Classic Black! This is the pair that gives leggings its bad reputation for trying to be pants, and I have a theory: they go with everything, so why not wear them with, well, everything? (And did you know they come in fleece-lined versions? I mean, come on!) The possibilities are endless here - a belted shirt dress, sweater dress, skater skirt, rider boots, wellies (Hunters), loose tunics, dusters, and I could go on. The problem, one might say, is that it truly does become just an accessory and doesn’t add much to an outfit. Well, I say nay. Classic black leggings will bring any, and I mean ANY, outfit to a whole new echelon.
We have to touch on tights. This slightly less-opaque cousin of leggings are super sassy and funky. Some of my favorite patterns are lace and polka dot. You can put these in place of any of the scenarios discussed and come out with an edgier feel. Wear them under cut off shorts, dress them up with some chunky jewelry or aviators, slip them into a combat boot or a heeled bootie.
Be they solid or lacey, playful plaid or classic, leggings and coordinating accessories are a no-brainer. Have your client incorporate one outfit using this fun trend, or pick up a few pairs at a local boutique. The biggest advantage? One size usually fits all, so stock up!"
Love love love this post! Thanks so much for sharing, Amanda! I love that you discussed how leggings are NOT pants. SO true...
Stay Stylish, friends!Megan
