What to Wear Wednesday...with Renee Marchelle

It's WTWW! This week we have Renee Marchelle Photography joining us to chat about boho styles:)

"I’m a Cali girl. It’s no secret. From the way I talk to the way I dress, it’s obvious I was raised on the West Coast. That said, it’s no wonder why my photography style is largely inspired by one of the biggest fashion trends out here and that is the free-flowin, individualistic style that we all love- Boho!

Okay..so maybe you’re over there thinking “What the heck is boho style” (don’t worry, I gotchu!). Bohemian (or boho), with regard to fashion, is a term that is used to describe an earthy, free-spirited, vintage fashion…although, it seems to be used very loosely. Maybe one persons interpretation of boho style is different than another’s- and that is totally OK!

There is no wrong way to dress in boho inspired clothes. For real. You just can’t go wrong! Why? Because it’s form of fashion that allows you to be completely individualistic and unique to your own personality!

I love everything about today’s many boho styles and I love that today’s teens flock to the local boutiques to keep up with what’s in trend! Whether it’s a casual, modern outfit with a few boho inspired jewelry pieces or an outfit straight out of the 70’s, there are many ways to incorporate this sort of style into your photography session!

Jewelry is the easiest way to add some boho flare to a causal outfit. Having a collection of jewelry for your clients to choose from is a great way to enhance the client experience- as well as enhance any outfit!

If you’re on a budget, you can find great deals at places like Claire’s and Forever 21. If you’re looking to have a unique collection with one-of-a-kind boutique items (which may be ideal since you are most likely running a boutique photography business), consider shopping at (or partnering with) a local boutique! Seriously, they have the best jewelry and your teens will be so stoked when they see themselves embellished in gorgeous gold, silver and turquoise!

Another simple way to spruce up a look is to throw on a boho style kimono! They’re light-weight, flow effortlessly with the wind, and tend to be super affordable (holler!). Kimonos are the perfect way to enhance an outfit while also deemphasizing imperfections. With the right posing and shooting angles, a kimono will flatter ANY body type! Kimonos can be worn with almost anything: Denim jeans, denim shorts, a short skirt, a long maxi skirt, or over a casual dress! The possibilities are endless!

Crochet ponchos are another popular boho trend that, like the kimono, can be easily added to an outfit for some boho flare. I’ve found that the best ponchos are thick and heavy duty. The quality is apparent as soon as you touch it. Unlike the kimono which is super lightweight, inexpensive, and sometimes very sheer, the poncho is more durable and usually a bit more pricey. They are, however, very fun to photograph and come in various colors, patterns, and textures. They make for great portrait opportunities!

One of my favorite things to photograph is a stunning flower garland! You can craft them yourself (like I love to do) or you can purchase them from local vendors who make them! They’re super easy to make and they SCREAM boho! And come on, what teen doesn’t love flowers? They’re gorgeous (duh) and they make girls look and feel pretty! Make it your next Pinterest project- “ DIY Flower Garlands”. Spring time is the best time. So basically, the time is now. Get crackin!

Lace is another way to incorporate boho style into your portrait session. For a modern look, pair lace with denim and for a more artistic look, pair lace with tulle! When assembled tastefully, lace can be the highlight of a stunning boho inspired outfit.

However you choose incorporate boho style into your portrait session, just remember that you can do so however you please. You can keep it simple or go all out. Whether you’re from Texas, Virginia, middle of no where Nebraska or straight outta Cali, it’s a fashion trend that can be worn around the world and always look good because it’s a direct reflection of the person wearing the clothes. It’s a style seen everywhere, but it’s the individual who represents the personality of the outfit. Discover your inner bohemian and let it free. Be authentic. Be you!"
Such a GREAT post, Renee! I love the boho styles as well. The imagery here is fabulous, thank you for joining us!
