Eye on Fashion: A Teen's Perspective // Victorian Influences

When thinking over fashion trends this week, I couldn’t help but become drawn the the Victorian Era(perhaps this has to do with the fact that I just finished being a part of my school’s production of Dracula, which was done in full Victorian costumes? :)). Though everything we see in pictures of the era appears to be old and outdated, its interesting to see how many similarities can actually be found between today’s fashion and that of Victorian times. Here are a couple that spring immediately to mind:Screen Shot 2013-11-18 at 5.54.58 PMBrocade- that pattern that looks like its been copied from the wallpaper of that old mansion down the street- has been making more and more of an appearance in leggings and pants(and some dresses too!) Wear them with neural colored baggy sweater, add a chunky necklace, and you’re all set! And, of course, it can’t be a proper article about Victorian clothing without mentioning collars. Lace, detailed collars that sat high on the neck, often being the focus of a blouse or dress, was very characteristic of the time. Collars were often detachable and or/spread across the shoulders. Sounds similar to the collars/bib necklaces that are popular today, yes? Especially the lace/crocheted collars you can attach to your button-ups as you please. It has also become trendy to wear occasionally wear button-up blouses buttoned up to the neck- drawing attention to the collar.
